Body / Key Points

Meet one of our bestsellers at CNC Tools Depot — the Korloy CCMT09T304-HMP NC6315.
Here’s why it’s turning heads (and parts) on shop floors:

Key Features & Specs:

  • Geometry / Shape / Chip Breaker: Rhombic (CCMT) shape, with “HMP” chip breaker design for medium cutting in cast iron machining.

  • Grade / Coating: K15 series, CVD coated. Delivers strong wear resistance, anti-chipping, and resistance to built-up edge in cast iron work.

  • Substrate / Layering: Optimized functional substrate combining hardness and toughness, plus alumina and titanium layers to resist flaking and fracture.

  • Cutting Applications: Primarily for turning cast iron (gray, ductile). In heavy interrupted, high feed, or continuous conditions it holds stable performance.

  • Recommended Cutting Conditions (for cast iron):
      • Medium mode (MK chip breaker): depth of cut ~1.0–2.5 mm, feed ~0.1–0.35 mm/rev
      • Rough / interrupted (RK or “-HMP” style): suitable for more aggressive cuts, strong edge support under vibration

Why It’s a Bestseller

  • Less downtime — longer edge life even in interrupted cuts means fewer insert changes.

  • Stable tool life — reduced variation between edges, meaning your process is more predictable.

  • Better surface finish — optimized blade design & chip breaker reduce chatter, improve part surface quality.

  • High wear & chipping resistance — especially in cast iron, a common pain point in inserts.

  • Edge robustness against vibration / intermittent cut — chip breaker and substrate design help resist edge breakage in real-world conditions.

Application Industries:

This insert shines in sectors such as:

  • Automotive (cast iron parts, engine blocks, housings)

  • Aerospace (components with cast iron housings)

  • Die & Mold (cast iron molds, housings)

  • Heavy Machinery / General Engineering (pumps, gear cases, cast iron structural parts)

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s optimized for gray and ductile cast iron machining. The NC6315 grade and chip breaker design offer better wear and chipping resistance under cast iron cutting conditions

While primarily intended for cast iron, in light cuts or low stress operations it might work for mild steel. But for best results in steel/stainless, Korloy offers other grades designed specifically for those materials.

  • MK / HMP (medium cutting): for smoother continuous cuts, better surface finish, reduced cutting load.

  • RK (rough / interrupted): when depth of cut is high or the cut is interrupted, offering stronger edge support.

Typical ranges (for cast iron):

  • vc (cutting speed) in moderate range (e.g., 150–340 m/min for ductile cast iron)

  • Depth of cut ap ~0.5–3 mm depending on chip breaker and rough/finish mode

  • Feed fn ~0.1–0.35 mm/rev typical for medium cutting; in rough mode feed can go higher

Korloy’s NC6315 shows improved wear resistance, flaking resistance, and stable tool life especially under high feed or interrupted cuts. In comparative tests, NC6315 often offers 16-25 % longer life over conventional K15-class inserts under similar conditions.
