Korloy CNMG120404-HM PC9030 is a premium PVD-coated carbide turning insert designed for stainless steel. Features HM chipbreaker and ultra-fine substrate for high wear & chipping resistance, delivering longer tool life and better surface finish. Ideal for medium/low speed turning in automotive, aerospace and die & mold.
The Korloy CNMG120404-HM PC9030 offers a robust solution for machinists working with stainless steel. It combines the proven CNMG-80° negative rhombic geometry (size 12, corner radius ≈0.4 mm) with the HM chipbreaker to control chip flow and resist vibration and chipping. The PC9030 grade uses an ultra-fine carbide substrate with a PVD TiAlN coating that resists built-up edge, improves oxidation resistance, and maintains sharpness even under interrupted cuts or feed variations.
In practice, this insert allows higher productivity by increasing cutting lengths between indexings, reduces component rejects with better surface finishes, and cuts down tool change downtime. Application areas include automotive exhausts, aerospace fasteners, die & mold cavities, and general SS fabrication.
“Cutting SS with fewer tool changes: get 2–3× longer life & much less downtime with Korloy’s PC9030 inserts! 💪”
Geometry & Size: CNMG-120404-HM — 80° negative rhombic shape, corner radius ~0.4 mm (CNMG12 size class, HM chipbreaker).
Grade & Coating: Grade PC9030 — ultra-fine carbide substrate + PVD coating (TiAlN thin film) optimized for turning stainless steels.
Machining Applications: Primarily turning stainless steels (including SS304, SS316 etc.), especially at medium to low speeds. Good resistance to built-up edge and chipping.
Reduced cost per component: because of its superior wear-resistance & toughness you can run longer before replacing inserts.
Fewer stops: fewer breakdowns or pick-ups due to chipping or built-up edge means smoother production runs.
Better surface finish: clean cuts even at moderate feeds, thanks to the TiAlN coating and ultra fine substrate — less smearing, better dimensional consistency.
Perfect for industries that machine stainless steel and require high finish + high volume:
Automotive (exhaust parts, shafts)
Aerospace (fittings, components in SS)
Die & Mold
General engineering & fabrication that use SS
It’s built for stainless steels (e.g. SS304, SS316), especially when turning at medium-to-low speeds where built-up edge and chipping are challenges.
For CNMG120404-HM PC9030: feeds in the range ~0.10-0.30 mm/rev, depth of cut (ap) ~0.9-5 mm depending on roughing or finishing mode, wet or with coolant gives best life.
HM chipbreaker geometry helps manage chip shape and size, reducing cutting forces and avoiding chipping especially in interrupted cuts. That yields more stable machining and fewer insert failures.
While exact life depends on part geometry, material, machine, etc., PC9030 shows noticeably higher resistance to wear and chipping vs generic carbide or lower-coated grades. Many users report significantly longer tool-on time, reduced scrap, fewer insert changeovers.
The TiAlN coating and substrate of PC9030 provide good oxidation resistance, which helps in semi-dry or less-lubricated operations, but to maximise life and surface finish, using coolant or good lubrication is recommended
