The Deskar TNMG160404-CQ LF9218 is a premium triangular carbide turning insert with LF9218 grade (steel/stainless steel), CQ chipbreaker, designed for medium‐finishing turns. Offers excellent wear resistance, sharp edge strength and reliable surface finishes with reduced cost per component.
Deskar TNMG160404-CQ LF9218 Turning Insert
Take your turning operations to the next level with this high‐performance insert built for durability, precision & efficiency. TNMG160404-CQ LF9218 is a sharp, double-coated carbide insert optimized for steel and stainless steel turning.
Key Features & Specs:
Geometry / Format: ISO TNMG − triangular insert (60° included angle), negative-rake design. Size code 1604 means ~16.0 mm inscribed circle, 04 nose radius etc. The “CQ” chipbreaker type gives a balanced combination of sharp cutting, chip control & durability.
Grade: LF9218 — Deskar’s double-coated carbide grade, especially for steel & stainless steel applications. It provides high hardness, thermal stability & wear resistance.
Coating / Surface Finish: Double coated (CVD / multilayer carbide coatings) to reduce friction, resist built-up edge (BUE), and withstand high temperatures.
Applications / Capabilities:
• Ideal for external turning of steels & stainless steel (ISO P & M materials).
• Medium to finishing cuts—light to moderate depth of cut and feed settings. Good in moderately tough conditions (e.g. alloys, intermittent cuts) where you need edge sharpness as well as edge strength.
Why It’s a Best Seller:
Reduced downtime: Longer life per insert due to LF9218’s wear resistance and strong edge retention. Fewer insert changes.
Better surface finish: Sharp CQ chipbreaker keeps chip formation stable, avoids tear-outs & built-up edges on steel/stainless surfaces.
High wear resistance: Double coating plus robust substrate mean the insert handles heat & abrasion better, especially when cutting at speed.
Cost per component drops: If an insert lasts longer and reduces rejects, the cost per turned part goes down significantly.
Industries & Use Cases:
Automotive: shafts, housings, components in steel & stainless, where finish and consistency matter.
Aerospace: turning of high-strength stainless / alloy steel parts.
Die & mold: pre-finishing operations in steels / tool steels.
General engineering / Industrial machinery: shafts, pins, components where steel & stainless are common.
LF9218 is optimized for steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M). It's less ideal for cast iron, very hard alloys, or non-ferrous metals where different grades are preferable.
“CQ” chipbreaker provides a good balance of sharp cutting edge for finishing & light turning, plus chip control to avoid sticking and built-up edge. This results in better surface finish and fewer interruptions.
The “04” in TNMG160404 denotes the nose radius (approximately 0.4 mm) or similar dimension in the standardized code. This gives medium strength + ability to produce a decent surface finish without requiring an ultra small radius.
Because of its higher resistance to wear and better edge life, you get more parts turned per insert. Also fewer scrapped parts or rework due to improved surface finish. That lowers your cost per component.
